SECRETS of the LAKES
Stories from the History of Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching

Rediscover the world
you thought you knew...

The J.C. Morrision, a 150-ton "floating palace" that ran out of Bell Ewart was frequently blown off course by wind and waves. Though the ship mysteriously caught fire in 1857, its burned hull was not discovered until 1974. Artifacts from the Morrison can be viewed at the Simcoe County Museum.

Mrs. Samuel Lount begged the new Lieutenant-Governor, Sir George Arthur, for her husband's life but to no avail. Lount, a prosperous blacksmith and farmer from Holland Landing, was hanged at the York jail, April 12, 1838, for his participation in the Rebellion of 1837.

Sir William Mulock built a canal in a vain attempt to make Newmarket a port on the Trent canal system. Officially abandoned in 1912, remains of the "ghost canal" are still evident in certain areas.

Secrets of the Lakes is a collection of stories and photographs that traces the fascinating history of Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. A popular destination for cottagers and pleasure-seekers today, these lakes were once part of the essential inland waterway that opened up the region and the North American interior to waves of Indians and explorers, fur traders and soldiers, and settlers and entrepreneurs who carved out an existence from the wilderness. This evolution from strategic waterway to tranquil pleasure ground is explored by visiting places where the past still resonates--historic communities, shipwrecks, abandoned sites and stately manors. The book includes over 100 stories and 170 archival photographs from places around Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching to enliven any journey on or around these beautiful waters.

Stephen Leacock denied that the adventures of the steamer Mariposa Belle in his book Sunshine Sketches of a Little
Town
were modeled after the Lake Couchiching steamer Enterprise but locals knew better.
