Toronto: Stories From the Life of a City
Why was Bay Street originally known as Bear Street? Who built Spadina Avenue so he could get a better view of what? What was in great abundance here, and one of Colonel Simcoe's delicacies? And what neighbourhood pest was considered "very tasty with mint sauce?"
York, the first episode in the series, TORONTO: STORIES FROM THE LIFE OF A CITY, introduces us to the humble beginnings of this city. It covers the period from 1793 to 1834 - from Colonel and Mrs. Simcoe's arrival at a clearing in the wilderness in 1793, through the precarious growth of the village and town, to the incorporation of the city in 1834.
Narrated by Mrs. Simcoe, the film is packed full of stories that poke gentle fun at our early inhabitants, and bring these roughly-hewn early years to life. Their preoccupations and concerns, told in their own words, resonate surprisingly loudly now. Rarely-seen images of York are matched up with footage of modern Toronto - you will never be able to look at this city the same way again.
